Well, in many ways, these questions are similar to ones that we ask ourselves here at VolunTours™.

Often we can deliver an incredible description of a visit to a remote location in Los Algodones, for example, where VolunTourists make roofing tiles with a mason or extract honey with a women's beehive cooperative in Mexicali. We can even provide photos for those who did not participate. Until you do participate, however, you are just a spectator. And VolunTourism is not a spectator sport.
